The lowdown on Pinterest. As featured by the BBC today and possibly hitting the UK in a big way this year!
Pinterest started out as a place for individuals to connect with friends and then developed into a place for businesses. We’ve just requested an invitation to join and are “on a waiting list”. Pinterest is on the brink of individual-to-business use, so a great time to join in. Since launching in March 2010 it’s had nearly $7.2 million unique visitors. Its a little American centric at the moment but weren’t most social media start ups that now claim world domination amongst their list of achievements?
So what is it? Its the social networking of visuals. It allows people to “pin” pictures that they like onto their virtual boards.
People not only have the ability to pin things they see onto their Pinterest boards, but they can comment on photos, like photos, and follow certain subjects or certain people. In other words, the site has a definitely social media feel.
And its got quite a lot of benefits for businesses we think…..
Visibility and SEO: Every image includes a link back to the website where it originated. Spread the word, spread the love, spread your reach. This improves brand visibility, web traffic and SEO because the links will count as inbound links.
Photography popularity: People are simply more interested in photos than they are articles – infographics are also extremely successful. So get visual! Brilliant for products.
Interaction: You can build connections and relationships and its not “technical” so your staff can do it, and enjoy iy, without being designers or technical whizz kids.
Target Audience: People choose which topics they would like to follow and which topics interest them so you can get the right eyes looking at you.
All rather lovely and fun so give it a go and join us on there (once we have our invitation of course).

Its not often something in the photographic world goes viral across the internet, but when you present something as stunning and unusual as Seth Casteel’s underwater dog photos, they deserve to be seen by everyone. And indeed over 16000 people have liked his facebook gallery in the last week or so.
Absolutely wonderful – capturing emotions and images that otherwise we would never get to see. Lifestyle pet photography has made our day here!

Sometimes the simplest things are the best.
And this really tickled us this week (although our proof reader did spot the spelling mistake!)

The concept of Buy-One-Get-One-Free has been taken to a whole new level by online video production company Timbooktwo.
Timbooktwo are specialists in producing online travel videos, offering a complete service from pre to post production. Inspired by places visited on their travels, Timbooktwo wanted to give something back and make a positive difference, and so for every video they make for a tourism company, they donate their own time and money to produce one for a charity.
This video explains more: Timbooktwo
For businesses with social responsibility high on their agenda, could this model provide an innovative way to give something back?
We think so!

When Peter Shankman tweeted Morton’s Steakhouse (@mortons) that he’d love nothing more than a juicy steak after a long flight, little did he know Morton’s were watching.
Morton’s PR team saw the PR potential in this, if they acted fast. So Morton’s tracked down Shankman’s arrival time, hired a driver to collect him from the airport and took him to the nearest Morton’s Steakhouse and gave him exactly what he wanted….a beautiful juicy steak!
Would Morton’s do this for everyone? No probably not, but when Peter Shankman, the author of the book, ‘Customer Service: New Rules for a Social Media World drops you a tweet, his 100,000 followers are pretty good incentive to go that extra mile.

Soderberdh Brings New meaning to ‘Viral Marketing’
The marketing team were quite literal in their visual marketing of Steven Soderberdh’s new film Contagian, which tells the story of a lethal airbourne virus that kills within days. Rather than run with the traditional billboard ad, Curb Media took ‘viral marketing’ literally and created a billboard entirely made from bacteria and housed it in an abandoned Toronto shop window.
The billboard remained for 5 days, growing and changing in appearance. Over 140,000 people watched a special time lapse video on Youtube where you can see just how bacteria can take over in such a short space of time.

When you do a great piece of b2b marketing, you get calls, you get hits on your website, but how do you then follow up those web visitors if you don’t know who they are?
We are trialling a new software tool that tells us. Powerful. Big brother, yes, but useful none the less.
It’s not perfect, as it can only reference about 30% of IP details to pass them on to you, it filters out home iPs etc. But for your key prospects, it’s a way of having a “trigger” activity to jump on to call and re-engage with them.
If you are interested in a free one week trial for your company, or to explore it in more detail, drop me a line helen@d3marketing.co.uk

LAN Airlines take a prompt from Oprah
As some of you may know, a few years ago Oprah stunned her audience by giving each one of them a brand new car. Talk about right place right time!
Well LAN Airlines decided to take a similar approach. To commemorate their recently expanded service, LAN descended on Nuela, a swanky restaurant in NYC, and teased diners by giving out prizes to a lucky few. This tease escalated to diners delight however when LAN announced that all diners would be receiving a prize, a free trip to anywhere LAN flies in South America. As you can imagine a mad scramble ensued when diners learnt the tickets were strapped to the underside of their tables.
I think it’s risk a few elbows to the ribs if it meant a free flight somewhere sunny!

For those that didnt know, Jo was pregnant and had a little baby boy a few weeks early on Christmas Day! George is doing well, mum was tweeting from her hospital bed (we told her off), photos to follow shortly…
A baby born on Christmas Day is, in old English folklore, classed to be lucky and should be showered with gifts… if you rise early on Christmas Day its also supposed to signify wealth will come you way. Congratulations to Jo and lets hope the early mornings every day from now on increase the wealth opportunity!

Creative PR stunts make us smile. Something fun (aren’t we all fed up of the doom and gloom around?), something that drives people to the brand/venues (connecting is often missed) and the extra bonus of a prize at the end (we’re all suckers for something for nothing).
The “Stay the Night. Steal the Art” campaign ticks all the boxes for us and has achieved its aim – global visibility and viral spread.
Big round of applause to Art Series Hotels in Australia. Well deserved. See details of the campaign here
We’ve used this example to inspire the I Am Now Media team this week to come up with a relaunch and 2 new brand creative PR activities for early 2012. Hope they are scribbling away over the weekend, with or without the help of mulled wine?!
